about

I leave kernels of songs like a breadcrumb trail so I can always find my way home. “Go it alone” was a song I started earlier in 2019 and came back to when it resonated, after my relationship ended. At first, the chorus was pointed at another, and while that’s where it started, by the end of the song it was pointed at me. One of my favorite lines on the entire record is in this song and it came much later in the writing process, while we were recording instrumentals for FOF. “Oh to be the lines in your face, smile, you were hoping I might change”. Much like the chorus, I wrote this from a particular perspective, but it’s a two way street and one I think of often when we play this song. With awareness of reciprocity, of that two way street, this moment in the song is particularly hard to sing.

lyrics

Sometimes you feel it
Sometimes you don’t
Sometimes you mean it
Sometimes you won’t
And out of the laughing on
In through the smoke
I never meant this but
When you told me you were low

Refuse to fall in line
Tell me one more time
Refuse to fall in line
Tell me one more time

I can’t understand
I can’t understand
Why you wait
And you go
It alone
I can’t understand
I can’t understand
Why you wait
And you go
It alone

Oh to be the lines in your face
Smile
You were hoping I might change
Oh to be lines in those eyes
Smile
But I wouldn’t waste my time

And you walk like and you talk like and you’re gone
And you walk like and you talk like now you’re gone
And you walk like and you talk like and you feel like and you mean like

Sometimes you feel it
Sometimes you don’t
Sometimes you mean it
Sometimes you won’t
And out of the laughing on
And in through the smoke
I never meant this but
When you told me you were low

I can’t understand
I can’t understand
Why you wait
And you go
It alone
I can’t understand
I can’t understand
Why you wait
And you go
It alone
Why you wait
And you go
It alone
Why you wait
And you go
It alone
